Suspected New People's Army (NPA) guerillas killed 2 members of a family in an attack in Matuguinao town, Samar province, the military reported Tuesday.
Regional military spokesman Lt. Col. Armand Rico identified the fatalities as Doming dela Cruz, 50 and Junnie dela Cruz, 22, residents of Barangay Maduroto.
Rico said the 2 victims were inside their farmhouse in Sitio Himormot, Barangay Bag-otan with 3 other family members when an undetermined number of NPA guerillas fired at them.
The attack took place around 6 a.m. on Monday, the military spokesman said.
Rico said the incident was reported to the military by a member of the Dela Cruz family who was able to escape the attack.
He said joint police and military teams were able to bring 2 more members of the Dela Cruz family, including a 2-year-old boy, to a provincial hospital in Catbalogan City.
The remains of the 2 fatalities have also been taken out of the farmhouse.
Police and military teams have launched pursuit operations against the suspected rebels. Investigators have yet to determine the motive for the attack
