Prosecutors took the first step Friday toward appealing a judge's
decision tossing out the conviction of a landlord in the Black Sunday
trial.
The Bronx District Attorney's office filed a notice of appeal and
they have 90 days to decide whether to go forward with the challenge.
A jury convicted building owner Cesar Rios of criminally negligent
homicide in the 2005 deaths of FDNY Lt. Curtis Meyran and firefighter
John Bellew, who jumped to their deaths after getting trapped in a maze
of illegal subdivisions.
Judge Margaret Clancy overturned the verdict last month, finding that
there was not enough evidence to convict Rios - outraging the victims'
families.
