Obama on Health Bill

Obama will invite members of Congress who backed the legislation -- as well as some needy Americans who stand to be helped by the bill -- to the ceremony, which will usher in near universal health coverage for the first time.
"I think each and every member of the House and the Senate that supported health care reform will be invited," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
The ceremony was originally planned for the South Lawn of the White House, but due to inclement weather forecasts the president is now scheduled to sign the bill and deliver remarks in the building's East Room at 11:15 am (1515 GMT). Related article: History of US health care reform battle
He will then make a speech on the reform at the Department of the Interior at 12:05 pm (1605 GMT), his office said.
The House of Representatives passed the core of Obama's plan late Sunday, along with a package of changes the Senate must now endorse. Related article: Obama faces fierce 'post-game' battle on health care
But regardless of the Senate action, the health bill will become US law as soon as Obama signs it.

Stephon is China All-Star MVP

When Chen Yang landed an eight-week job to be a translator for Stephon Marbury, he was already familiar with the negative stories that followed the former NBA star to China. But by the time Marbury returned to the United States on Monday, Yang felt like the man he had come to know was someone different.
“You hear things, but I didn’t see it,” Yang said. “I read a lot of stuff on Web sites and a story in The New York Times before he came here. But I have to believe my eyes, not my ears.”
Plenty of people saw Marbury’s erratic behavior for themselves last summer when he hosted a 24-hour Internet video chat in which, among other things, he cried uncontrollably. Afterward, no NBA team seemed interested in signing him. To keep playing – and sell his Starbury shoes – Marbury, now 33, signed in January with Shanxi Zhongyu of the Chinese Basketball Association.
“It ain’t the grandest of things,” Marbury told Yahoo! Sports recently. “The talent, as far as basketball, it ain’t there. By that not being like that, you can get other business as well from being able to play a certain way.”
Yang said there were concerns that “no one could handle” Marbury, but he enjoyed working with Marbury and said he was humble and punctual. Most of Marbury’s downtime, Yang said, was spent staying in his housing, where he called home to speak to his wife and children and worked on his Starbury brand.
“American journalists didn’t seem to like him, but he likes to tell the truth,” Yang said. “From what I know, he’s a nice guy.”
Shanxi was 4-13 prior to Marbury’s arrival and 6-9 afterward with several close losses. Marbury averaged 22.9 points, 9.5 assists and 2.6 steals in 15 games while playing with former NBA forward Maurice Taylor(notes). Despite the team’s lack of success, Marbury remained a big draw in China, Yang said Marbury sold more than 1,500 pairs of Starbury shoes between two autograph sessions.
“There could be dominance here with what I’m doing with my brand,” Marbury said. “There are so many people and they love my stuff. I got a great situation and I’m taking advantage of it.”
Yang said it is typically accepted that foreign players cannot play in the CBA’s All-Star game if they arrive in the middle of the season. Marbury’s popularity, however, allowed the CBA to make an exception for him, and he responded by totaling 30 points and 10 assists in the game. Afterward, he donated the money he received for being named MVP to a Beijing elementary school.
“The fans loved him all over China,” Yang said. “Every single game, home or away, they were sold out. A lot of teams didn’t sell out games before, but when Stephon was there, [fans] held up old pictures and wore his New York jersey. … It was a success.”
With Shanxi out of the playoffs, the All-Star game was Marbury’s last CBA appearance. Yang said Marbury left Monday afternoon and gave no indication whether he would return next season.
“I don’t know if he’ll come back,” Yang said. “I think he had a good time in the CBA. It was a good experience for him.”

Judge Hears Lesbian Teens Suit

Mississippi officials who canceled a prom after a lesbian student asked to bring her girlfriend told a federal judge today that there were issues with the event even before that.
The American Civil Liberties Union is suing in U.S. District Court to force the Itawamba County school district to sponsor the prom and allow Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
Schools Superintendent Teresa McNeece and school board Chairman Eddie Hood testified that they had discussed not sponsoring the prom even before McMillen challenged a rule that prohibits same-sex dates. They said they had concerns about liability problems, including possible use of alcohol and drugs at a school-sponsored event.
But they also said they decided to call off the April 2 prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School because McMillen’s challenge to the rules had caused disruptions.
"We were being hounded every day. Our students were being hounded," McNeece said. "We were having a tough time of any bell-to-bell instruction."
On cross-examination, school officials did not give specific examples of classroom disruptions.
McMillen first approached school officials about bringing her girlfriend in December, and again shortly before a Feb. 5 memo about prom rules was circulated to students. Same-sex prom dates had been banned in the past, but she had hoped school officials would grant her request.
She was told two girls could not attend the prom together and she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo. The ACLU issued a letter earlier this month demanding that she be allowed to bring her girlfriend and wear what she wanted.
District officials responded by canceling the event, saying they felt it was the best decision "after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students."
ACLU attorney Kristy Bennett said in court Monday that the district violated McMillen’s First Amendment rights and that it was the decision to cancel the prom — not McMillen’s request to bring her girlfriend — that caused the disruptions school officials described.
"Any disruption came after the actual cancellation of the prom," Bennett said.
In closing arguments, Bennett said the district "shouldn’t be able to censor Ms. McMillen’s speech simply by canceling the prom."
Ben Griffith, an attorney representing the school district, said holding or attending a prom is not a constitutional right.
District officials "took a step they considered to be necessary," he said.
McMillen testified the district’s decision led to hostility toward her on campus. She said she left school early the day after the district’s decision and didn’t go at all the next day.
"There were so many dirty looks," McMillen said. "A lot of people didn’t like me very much."

The 715-student high school is located in Fulton, a town of about 4,000 in rural north Mississippi. The entire county school district has 3,588 students.
Principal Trae Wiygul said he had been "bombarded" with e-mails, most from people criticizing the district’s decision.
"I’ve been called every name known to man," Wiygul said. "I’ve been called a bigot and homophobic."
U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson, who is hearing the case, did not say when he would rule, but said he wants to do it quickly because "time is of the essence."
Parents are now organizing a prom. School officials said it is open to the public, but McMillen said she had not been told about it.
The ACLU and gay rights groups have raised private funds for a May 8 prom in Tupelo that’s open to everyone but geared toward gay students. Bennett said planning for the "second-chance" prom was underway before McMillen’s case began, but "the outpouring for Constance enables this to be a much bigger event."

Penelope Cruz in Pirate Franchise

Penelope Cruz sure has a reason to celebrate these days, and I’m not just talking because she’s one of the most gorgeous women I’ve ever seen — Cruz gets to reprise a side-by-side role starring with Johnny Depp in the latest edition of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Reps for both Cruz and the Pirates franchise have finally confirmed that the actress will take a lead in the upcoming movie.
The flick goes by title Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and is slated to hit theaters sometime in 2011. According to the film’s IMDB, the only returning characters will be Depp and Geoffrey Rush, who plays Barbosa. Reps for Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have confirmed that neither will return for the fourth Pirates edition.
Naturally, Cruz will be a minor love interest for Depp’s character, Jack Sparrow, and I really couldn’t be more pleased. If these two are anything like the way they presented themselves in Blow, we’re going to have a hard time concentrating on the movie’s plot — the chemistry between two of the hottest people in Hollywood, steaming up the Caribbean will be enough of a distraction itself.
I’ve always been a fan of Penelope Cruz and her acting and philanthropic ways, even if she did date that other, psycho “Cruise” and I wish her luck in her latest cinema endeavor.

Google Moves to Honkong

San Francisco, March 23 (DPA) Google has moved its Chinese-language search engine site to Hong Kong and stopped censoring its Chinese search results, the company announced Monday.
The move came after the web search giant announced Jan 12 that it would stop censoring its Chinese search results after discovering a cyber attack that originated in China and which was aimed at compromising Chinese human rights activists.

London Flunk

London has failed to make the top 50 “most live-able” cities, according to worldwide analysis by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Canada’s Vancouver scooped the top spot having met an impressive 98% of the criteria set by the surveyors, including the quality of healthcare, culture, environment and infrastructure.
Vienna in Austria is ranked second, closely followed by Melbourne, Australia. The top 20 includes five Australian cities, three Canadian cities and two German cities.

British Airways Cabin Crew Strike Update

Leaders of British Airways cabin crew tonight urged the airline's chief executive to "come out of his bunker" and hold fresh talks as a three-day strike over jobs and cost-cutting came to an end.
Thousands of passengers who had their journeys disrupted because of the walkout are braced for further problems because of a four-day stoppage due to start on Saturday.
Tony Woodley, joint leader of Unite, said he had not received any positive response from the company to his plea for fresh talks and added that chief executive Willie Walsh's silence was "deafening."
BA said its contingency plans were continuing to work well around the world, maintaining that it had added extra flights at Heathrow and Gatwick because more staff than expected had turned up for work.
The two sides continued to clash over the impact of the strike, with BA accusing the union of publishing information which had "no basis in fact".
Among the claims made by Unite today were that some aircraft had left Heathrow with their blinds down to hide the fact that few, if any, passengers were on board.
It is understood Mr Woodley has contacted TUC general secretary Brendan Barber about restarting talks which collapsed last week after BA tabled an offer Unite complained was worse than a previous one.
Mr Woodley visited picket lines around Heathrow Airport today and addressed a rally, reaffirming that the union leadership remained ready for talks at any time before the next strikes.
"Willie Walsh's silence is deafening. Where's Willie? He has not been seen or heard from today while his business grinds to a halt," he said.
"Cabin crew have sent the company the most powerful message over the last three days that they will not be cowed or bullied into accepting industrial dictat. I am proud of their solidarity and resilience, and the support they have given to this dispute, which none of them wanted.
"I would like to hear BA's board justify spending millions on a floundering strike-breaking operation when they turned down an offer of more than £55 million in cost savings from their own cabin crew.
"We estimate that BA may have spent as much as £18 million on leasing airplanes over the last three days, and it is beyond dispute that most of its long-haul flights have been cancelled, and most of those which have taken off are half-empty or completely passenger-free.
"This is the economics of the madhouse which can only lead to suspicions that there is another, union-busting, agenda at work here.
"Trying to break Unite will break BA's bank account. That is why it is time to talk. Pick up the phone, Willie."
Striking staff were in a buoyant mood at the rally, many booing BA flights as they passed overhead and joining in chants aimed at Mr Walsh of: "Willie, Willie, Willie - out, out, out."
One held a placard mocking the airline's slogan, which read: "The world's favourite picket line".
Meanwhile, at Heathrow's Terminal Five, disgruntled passengers faced further frustrations.
German couple Carolin and Stefan Marquardt were stuck in the terminal building for seven hours waiting for a flight home to Stuttgart - having cut short their holiday to India by a night.
BA said: "We are operating our planned schedule of departures at Heathrow and Gatwick and we have been able to add flights into our schedule at both airports over the weekend as well as today.
"We continue to operate across the world to almost 120 different destinations and are continuing to add in extra cities, due to the numbers of crew reporting for work.
"Cabin crew are continuing to report as normal at Gatwick, and Heathrow levels remain above what we need to operate our published schedule.
"As a PLC, British Airways is legally obliged to ensure that it does not release information that is misleading or inaccurate.
"This information includes matters such as numbers of passengers we are able to carry, numbers of flights operated and numbers of crew reporting for work. Any suggestion in media reports that information we have issued is untrue implies that the airline's management is acting unlawfully.
"Unite and its cabin crew branch, Bassa, are under no such legal constraints. A great deal of the information they have put out over the last three days has no basis in fact. For example, Unite has no way of obtaining accurate figures as to how many customers are on our aircraft or how many crew are reporting for work."
Business group London First, whose members include many of London's internationally-based businesses, said the capital's reputation as a centre for global trade was being damaged by the strike.
Chief executive Baroness Valentine said: "Despite the best efforts of BA management and many staff to continue to put the interests of passengers first, the strike is reminiscent of a best-forgotten era.
"The message from BA's London-based business customers to both sides is: Get back to the negotiating table, and to union members: Get back to work in the meantime."
